Amazing Breech Turn Using Hypnosis

I recently read this story from a HypnoBirthing mom whose baby was breech as she reached her due date. Despite many natural techniques, her baby remained transverse with no room to move. She finally contacted her HypnoBirthing instructor and went through the hypnosis session for breech turn….and only 4 hours later that baby turned into an optimal birth position! She went on to have the beautiful natural birth experience that she had been longing for.

I have also been amazed at how powerful the breech turn hypnosis is when I have been able to reposition breech babies using just my voice and the visualizations that I paint.

“My heart sank when I heard the news: at nearly 40 weeks, my baby was transverse. Nowhere near optimal position. No room to maneuver.

Well, I couldn’t follow my midwife’s advice to prepare for a c-section. Not yet.

Packing for Birth – Get the Essentials into the Bag!

If you are about to have a baby, you have some serious packing to do!

Find out what to put in your 3 bags (the Labor Bag, Postpartum Bag, and Daddy Bag) and plan ahead and work your list of pre-birth to dos!

  1.  Get These Things Done Before Labor!

Here are things to prepare before you leave home for the hospital or birthing center:

  • Put a dark towel on the car seat in case mom’s membranes release before the ride to hospital or on the way
  • Lavender essential oil and cotton pads – put a few drops of the oil on a cotton pad – it is a relaxing distraction for mom to inhale during car ride to hospital and when getting settled at the hospital
  • Create a music play list.  Don’t forget the tunes for labor – music helps to keep mom focused and in a relaxed state of mind.
  • Install the infant car seat – the hospital won’t let you take baby unless the car seat is properly installed
  • If you want to use an application to track surges during labor, get it installed on your phone before labor begins
  1.  What to put in your Labor Bag!

Bring these items with you when you are in labor and checking in at the hospital or birthing center:

  • Bottled water
  • Chapstick – birth breathing can create dry lips!
  • Birth gown, socks, slippers
  • Pillow & case – it can be very nice to have your own pillow – but put your own pillow case (non white) on so it doesn’t get mixed up with hospital pillows
  • Music related items:  iPod / docking station / batteries
  • Things to set the mood in the room:  LED candle, room spray, etc.
  • Birth ball
  • Camera, video camera, tripod, extra memory, charging cords
  • Several copies of your birth plan – one to hang on the Labor and Delivery Room door, one to give to the nurses’ station when you check in for your file, one to give to your Labor Nurse, an extra copy in case your nurse changes, and an extra copy for Dad’s reference
  • HypnoBirthing door sign, postpartum door sign, tape to hang signs
  • Drivers License – give this to your Birth Companion / Partner, in case it is requested when you check in to the hospital
  • Bring any pre-admission paperwork that has been given to you
  • Basket of treats for Labor and Delivery nurses with a copy of your birth plan attached.  The nurses love this and hopefully will take extra great care of you
  • After delivery snacks – you may be ravenous immediately after birth!  Bring some snacks and drinks!
  • Cell phone / charger
  1. Items to put into your Postpartum Bag

This bag you can leave in the car when you get to the hospital….Daddy can bring it in once the baby has arrived and you are settled in your postpartum room:

  • Pajamas / robe
  • Nursing shirts / Nursing bra
  • Comfortable pants
  • Underwear – the hospital will give you mesh ones, but you may want to bring your own
  • Maxi pads – the hospital will give you pads for post birth uterine blood, but you may want to bring your own
  • Toiletries – makeup, razor, hair brush, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, tooth brush, tooth paste
  • Breast Pads / breast ointment
  • Clothing for baby / hat / socks / mittens
  • Baby blanket – hospital provides scratchy ones!
  • Paperwork folder – you will get lots of paperwork at the hospital, bring a folder to securely store it all
  • Baby’s name written down – for hospital birth paperwork
  • List of people to call after baby is born
  • Paper/pen
  1.  Daddy Bag

Daddy needs things to get him through labor, too:

  • Snacks
  • Water / drinks
  • Comfortable clothes for day and night

Giving Birth: To Push or Not to Push?

When your labor advances, and your baby is ready to move down the birth path, will your medical provider instruct you to hold your breath and push?  Or, will you be allowed to work with your pulsating uterus and gently breathe your baby down and out?

In today’s environment of hospital births, most medical care providers encourage (and sometimes, force!) their patients to use the Valsa maneuver once the birthing mother’s cervix is 10 centimeters open.  The Valsa technique occurs when a doctor or other individual tells the mother to hold her breath through the count of ten, while bearing down as forcefully as possible.  This method of pushing is commonly referred to as “purple pushing”, since a mom can turn purple from holding her breath and pushing so hard.

The Valsa technique was developed in the 1930s as a way to test pressure with the ears.  However, its use in obstetrical care quickly became routine, despite a lack of proof showing its benefit.  More than 12 studies have focused on the Valsa technique, and none have found any medical benefit to the forced pushing and straining, in terms of releasing the baby from the birth path faster, easier, or with fewer complications.  However, it is postulated that heavy straining can actually have a negative effect by tightening the vaginal tissues and closing the vaginal outlet, thus slowing the descent of the baby.  Further, forceful pushing can create damage to the pelvic floor and other organs, such as the bladder, sometimes causing trauma or prolapse.  And, it’s not hard to imagine that while “purple pushing”, the oxygen supply is severely limited to both mom and baby.

If “purple pushing” is not the ideal way to birth a baby, what options do mothers have?

HypnoBirthing, a way of giving birth using hypnosis founded by Marie Mongan, encourages birthing mothers to instead “breathe the baby down” by gently breathing while trying not to create tension in the body, which could tighten the birth path and make the vaginal outlet less receptive to the baby’s descent.  HypnoBirthing encourages the mother to allow her body to function as nature intended and follow the spontaneous uterine waves that move through her body, and use her breath to nudge the baby down the birth path, without added force.  The body performs rhythmic spontaneous waves of downward pressure during birth, which is called the Natural Explusion Reflex (NER).  It is these NER waves which allow women in comas to deliver their babies without any coached forceful pushing.  According to Marie Mongan, “There actually is pushing involved with this approach, however the mother does not intentionally add to the bearing-down efforts that her body makes on his own, nor does she hold back.”  Forceful pushing creates tension, thus creating pain and fear, which slows the baby’s descent, prolongs the pushing phase, and creates discomfort.

A study conducted in 1957 showed that “when women were allowed to push without straining, better progress and greater ease [that] has to be witnessed to be believed” and less damage to the vaginal tissues.  A study from the University of Texas, South Western Medical Center came to the same conclusion in 2006.

The complication is that not all women feel the NER bearing down reflex.  A woman birthing without medication feels the NER very strongly.  However, moms on an epidural do not have sensation, therefore are unable to feel the NER sensation.  Just like a woman in a coma though, just because the sensation can’t be seen by bystanders or felt, does not mean that it is not occurring within the birthing body.

Medical care givers should give a birthing mother the chance to gently breathe their babies down, allowing her to tap into the natural ability that her body has to nudge the baby out of the uterus, through the birth path to crowing, and finally, give birth.  In most cases, parents will need to request that their care giver allow them the opportunity to try breathing the baby down, before agreeing to Vasla “purple pushing”.

Skin-to-Skin Bonding is For Daddy Too!

This skin-to-skin baby and daddy bonding fills my heart with joy! 

Skin-to-skin bonding feels great, but it also serves a hugely important process for parents and baby.

Skin-to-skin bonding regulates baby’s internal temperature, heartbeat, respiration rate, blood pressure, and emotional state. For parents, it also stimulates the release of oxytocin, as well as other hormones, which develop that amazing mother-baby and daddy-baby bond, and stimulates the production and let down of breast milk in mothers.

The best part?  It couldn’t be easier to perform!  Just remove the clothing, swaddles, and blankets that separate mom or dad and baby.  Place baby on chest, and cover baby with a light blanket to avoid heat loss through the back.  Snuggle and enjoy for as long as you both want!

Pregnant with a Breech Baby? Don’t Despair, Try Hypnosis!

Are you pregnant with a breech baby?

Hypnosis can be extremely successful at turning breech babies into the ideal head-down vortex posterior position, ready for easy birthing.

Hypnosis helps mothers to relax and let go of fear surrounding their upcoming birth.  Guided imagery allows mothers to visualize the physical changes necessary within their body, as well as changes in positioning of the baby, in order to encourage the baby to move into an optimal position for birth.

In May 1992, Dr Lewis Mehl Madrona from the Stanford University School of Medicine, published a study of breech babies which showed that hypnosis was an effective technique in turning breech babies.  In the study, two hundred women who had breech babies that were at least 36 weeks gestation were observed.  One hundred of the women in the study received hypnotherapy, while the other one hundred women did not.  Results found that of the 100 women who received hypnotherapy, after hypnosis treatment 81 of the babies were in the head-down vortex position.  In the control group, who did not receive hypnotherapy, only 26 of the babies turned spontaneously, prior to birth!  On average, only four hours of hypnotherapy was required to successfully turn each baby from breech to vortex.

If your baby is breech and is at least 34 weeks gestation, you may benefit from hypnotherapy to move your baby to move into a ready-to-birth head down, posterior position.  Turning a breech baby with hypnosis can usually be achieved in 1-2 sessions.
